Megan Slankard: Walker Straps

Walker Straps

Bruce D. Walker’s Acoustic Leather Guitar Strap
Made in America, Made in Arkansas

A Guitar Strap Like No Other!

Standard acoustic guitar straps will either tie to the top of the neck of the guitar or require a peg at the base of the neck. Both of these attachments create stress on the neck of the guitar.

In 2002, Bruce D. Walker, owner of Flying Possum Leather on Dickson Street in Fayetteville, Arkansas filed for U.S. Patent protection on a new style acoustic strap. This strap, unlike any other guitar strap, creates no stress on the neck of the guitar.

About Walker’s Strap

Walkers strap requires no peg at the base of the neck. This strap attaches to the peg in the rear of the guitar and fits around the player. At the attachment of the peg, Walkers strap is one inch wide. At the back edge of the guitar, this one-inch strap splits to two one half inch straps.

The upper strap fits behind the back of the player, fitting over the shoulder. The lower strap fits behind the back of the guitar passing to the front of the guitar at the indention between the front swell and the rear extending to fit behind the base of the neck of the guitar.

At this point, the strap extends upward over the shoulder. The attachment of these two straps at the shoulder is a small buckle. At the buckle, Walkers strap is adjustable for heights of approximately 5’9” or smaller to approximately 6’6”.

Accompanying this strap is a sheepskin-backed leather pad. The two straps fit through slots in the pad. The buckle and strap attachment fits adjustable to the middle of the pad. Acoustic guitars that have no peg in the guitar’s head stock were not designed to have a peg. Drilling a hole in the head stock of these guitars, especially of vintage character, greatly diminishes the value of these guitars. Walkers strap protects the value and integrity of these guitars, while allowing the player to play in a standing position.

The first series of straps will be signed and numbered. Number one went to Neil Young, number two went to Willie Nelson, number three to local artist Jed Clampit and the fourth to singer, song writer Allan Thomas.

Walker’s straps are available at Flying Possum Leather on Dickson Street in Fayetteville, Arkansas. These straps are made of top quality English Bridle leather, good for years of quality performance.

Oberst was chatty during his performance, telling the crowd stories about his mother, the song the band had written earlier in the day (“10 Women”) and the guitar strap he had bought from Flying Possum Leather, across the street from the performance venue.
